Sculpture

at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza

Public art gives expression to global dialogue and
cultural diversity

A visit to  Dag Hammarskjold Plaza reveals  an ever-changing display of impressive sculptural works curated through NYC Parks & Recreation “Art in the Parks” program.

Each exhibit remains on display for three to six months.

All are self-funded through the artists, their agents or sponsors.  Our organization plays a collaborative role in approaching artists from around the world and facilitating the process.

Some have delighted, others have inspired awe, all have touched us…one emitted sounds of whales.

The park’s location and historic role as a gateway to the United Nations inspires works with universal and humanitarian themes.

Most exhibits are installed on the sculpture platform at the top of the steps near the entrance dome at Second Avenue and East 47th Street. However, some artists such as Steinunn Thorarinnsdottir  have utilized  the entire Plaza, encouraging interplay with the public. Large pieces have also graced  the area between the park café and First Avenue (UN Plaza).
