Crowds & Culture: Nigerian Fest Returns Sat. Oct. 11, Music, Dance, Food

The annual  Nigerian cultural festival returns  to Dag Hammarskjold Plaza on Saturday, October 11th following the Nigeria Independence Day Parade, which starts at 11 AM on Second Avenue at 54th Street and terminates at the Nigeria House on 44th Street, followed immediately by the festival in the park with performances by local and international musicians and dancers, accompanied by traditional Nigerian cuisine, merchandise and cultural displays. The largest gathering of Nigerians in the U.S., the festival in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza is the culmination of a 3-day series of events organized by the Nigeria Independence Day Committee (NIDC), a coalition of Nigerian cultural, religious, professional, business, and civic organizations. The annual Parade in New York City was started in 1991 by the Organization for the Advancement of Nigerians (O.A.N. Inc.) and celebrates the African country’s independence from Great Britain on October 1, 1960.
